Good Idea

Astoria, Oregon ~ January 18, 2013
12th Street and the Riverwalk

Stop. Watch for Trolley. Do not drive into the river.

Note the small patch of frost next to the building. I could be wrong, but I don't remember another winter (since I arrived in 2001) where we've had a week when frost doesn't melt in the shadows by afternoon. Not snow, but frost.

Next Door

 Astoria, Oregon ~ January 15, 2013

This house on Irving between 9th and 10th is the companion to yesterday's post. In yesterday's second photo, the two old Victorians looked deceptively close together.

Hilly streets and sidewalks are part of the landscape.

I thought the treatment of the lintel over the walkway was inventive.

This old house has a nice warm sun in the points of the eaves. I don't remember what you call this part of the house.

Green Victorian

Astoria, Oregon ~ January 15, 2013

Astoria has its share of fascinating houses.

It looks more substantial from this angle.

The details are always unique.

Like many, this old house on Irving near 9th Street bears a historic plaque:

1889
Built by J.H. Mansell, notary. La
ter occupied by John Mc Cue, U.S.
Customs Inspector, 1906. Pres-
byterian Parsonage for
W.S. Gilbert

Captain Gray's Port of Play

Astoria, Oregon ~ December 2, 2012

One of the great places for kids and their families in this land of constant rain is the Captain Gray's Port of Play, where I attended a birthday party on December 2nd.

This is not a small play area. The entire gymnasium of the old Gray School has been given over to one purpose: kids having fun (and parents and grandparents not losing them). The school was named after Captain Robert Gray, an early sea captain explorer who braved the river bar and named the Columbia River.

People of all colors and stripes (or spots) are welcome.

The place is popular for birthday parties, and there were two going on the day I was there.

In this climate it is very important to keep the guests dry.

I especially enjoyed talking with this guest about her favorite color. Can you guess what it is?

And if anyone has had enough playing, they can always retire to the Nautical Suite for a bowl of Cheerios and a nap.

Captain Gray's Port of Play has its own Facebook Page.

Inside Xclusive

Astoria, Oregon ~ January 3, 2013

Festive decorations remain in the window at Xclusive Salon. By the way, I had dinner with Jane last night in the (still pretty new) buffet restaurant downstairs at Pier 11 (the red building in the middle of the photo). I was impressed with the food, and the price was only $10.00 for all you can eat with the senior discount. I'm not sure what the pricing is for regular folks.

I had sushi, seaweed, tender creamed chicken, sauteed mushrooms,  a bite of beef, pineapple chunks, chocolate pudding, and I'm sure there must have been a vegetable in there somewhere (uh huh). I was proud of myself for not overeating, although it was very tempting. If it's too dark to see the water, you can enjoy the brightly-lit fishing boats.

I want to thank Jessie for helping me out as guest blogger. She is hitting the books again, getting ready for college.

Column View

Not sure when this was taken but it was taken from the top of the column. Astoria is my home now and may be for years to come but on this day we celebrate a new year with the ones we love and care for. I hope you all had a nice and safe New Years. Mine was wonderful. I spent it with my family watching movies and hanging out on the couch. This picture has detail beyond your imagination, but that is not why I like it. I like it because no matter how you look at it, there is something for everybody to look at and enjoy. I hope you enjoy the picture.
